Yog practice for insomnia: Natural Ways to Restore Peaceful Sleep
Insomnia is a condition in which one is unable to sleep at night. Due to lack of proper sleep, a person may experience problems such as irritability, anger, constipation, and gastric issues.
Causes of Insomnia
Some common causes of insomnia include:
- Stress of any kind (workplace, home, or personal)
- Fear or anxiety
- Hatred or negative emotions towards others
- Genetic predisposition to insomnia
According to Ayurveda and Yoga, the root cause of most diseases—including insomnia—is stress, which arises from the five Kleshas (Avidya, Asmita, Raga, Dvesha, Abhinivesha). Therefore, in order to cure such diseases, it is essential to first address and reduce stress.
Yoga Practices to Reduce Insomnia
It is recommended to perform these asanas in the morning on an empty stomach for maximum benefit.
- Tadasana – Stretches every muscle of the body, improves blood circulation, removes laziness, and increases agility. Practice 5 rounds, holding each for up to 10 seconds.
- Katichakrasana – Provides a good stretch around the waist area and helps eliminate lethargy.
- Surya Namaskar – Stretches the entire body and allows prana shakti (vital energy) to flow through every part. It is considered one of the best practices for reducing insomnia and laziness.
- Shashankasana – A relaxing posture that calms stress and anger, promoting better sleep.
- Bhujangasana – Stretches the back muscles, relieves backache, reduces stress, and supports sound sleep.
- Shavasana – A corpse-like posture that completely relaxes the body and mind. It relieves tension, anxiety, anger, and insomnia.
Pranayama for Insomnia
- Bhramari – Stimulates the pineal and pituitary glands, reduces negative thoughts, and is highly effective in treating insomnia.
- Anulom Vilom – Alternate nostril breathing that helps control anger, reduces high blood pressure, and calms the nervous system.
Important Information About Yoga Practice
The above yoga asanas and pranayama practices are excellent tools to reduce insomnia and stress naturally. However, they should always be practiced under the guidance of a qualified yoga instructor.
